Andy has been a keen and active climber and mountaineer for many years. He has climbed over much of the UK and many areas of Europe. Initially only a recreational climber, he discovered he had a gift for instruction and teaching whilst introducing friends to climbing for the first time. Encouraged by this, he qualified as a climbing instructor (Single Pitch Award) and went on to train and qualify for his ML (Mountain Leader Award) allowing him to teach safe travel through the UK's mountainous regions with requisite navigation skills and route planning. He teaches the National Navigation Award Scheme at Bronze and Silver levels and has recently trained to teach leading on indoor climbing walls.
Andy has also worked for several years as a climbing instructor for the national youth programme 'Positive Futures', which provides projects and activities for children from deprived communities. Through this programme young people are encouraged to build relationships based on mutual trust and respect and stay clear of crime, drugs and alcohol misuse.
Andy is particularly good at working with young people and those with little or no experience of outdoor pursuits who may be nervous and unsure of what to expect. He is calm and patient at all times, and doesn't mind having to repeat or re-explain anything, so you'll never be afraid to ask stupid questions! He naturally adapts his teaching style to suit what each individual requires and has the skills necessary to get information across clearly and easily.
As well as climbing, Andy enjoys mountain biking and skiing, and pretty much any outdoor activity that doesn't involve water. He likes being outdoors (whatever the weather), loud music, tinkering with his van, and not getting old. He dislikes Renault Traffic vans, accidentally running people over on his bike, and doing his accounts.
